While grabbing a quick meal from a campus restaurant might be your best option some days, there are times when you want something a little more exciting, but still affordable. Luckily for you, when you're a student at the University of Washington, there are plenty of places throughout the U District that have designed their menus with a student budget in mind. You can get a taste of global cuisine at several budget friendly restaurants near UW, without leaving Seattle.

Indian

Don't let the name confuse you, Chili's South Indian Restaurant has nothing in common with the the American chain restaurant with a similar name. The restaurant specializes in south Indian cuisine — think dosas, thalis and idli– and offers a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. If you're on a special or restricted diet, such as vegan or gluten-free, just let the chef/owner know and she'll make up something special for you.

If you're looking for a place where you can eat until you're full, without spending much, head to Swagat Palace Indian Cuisine. It's open for lunch and dinner and features an all-you-can-eat buffet. The lunch buffet is just $8.21 and is served until 3pm, making it ideal for checking out between daytime classes.

Mexican

The first word you'd use to describe Memo's Mexican Restaurant is cheap. The second, third, and fourth words you'd use are "open 24 hours." Memo's is the place to go when you've been up for hours studying or when you’re looking for something after a long night partying. Although you can expect to pay upwards of $10 per burrito at other restaurants, at Memo's you can find a basic bean and cheese burrito for around $3. Even burritos with beef, chicken or fish cost less than $6 here. Although its prices are cheap to begin with, the restaurant regularly offers a number of specials and coupons, such as a free drink with any food purchase.

Italian

If you associate Italian cuisine with the Olive Garden, you haven't had Italian cuisine. Let Il Corvo, a small pasta-only, lunch-only restaurant change your mind. The small restaurant is owned and operated by a chef who studied cooking in Italy. The menu, which consists of three dishes of fresh-made pasta, changes pretty much daily. Pasta dishes cost around $9 and the side selections are usually priced under $5. Although it is a lunch-only place, and is only open until 3pm, you can order wine, by the glass, bottle or liter.

Thai

With a name like Amazing Thai, you'd be right in expecting things to be pretty good. The tiny restaurant offers delicious Thai dishes, such as red curry, pad thai, and pad see ew for a very budget friendly price. Most dishes are under $10.

Timing is important at Amazing Thai. Although it is open for lunch and dinner, it does close between 3pm and 5pm on weekdays. So, if you get hungry during those hours, you'll have to wait or find somewhere else to go. If you do visit for lunch or dinner, you have the option of dining in or taking your food to go. The restaurant also offers delivery within a 3 mile radius, for orders above a certain amount.
