There’s no denying the fact that there are plenty of things to do in Seattle’s University District. With a wide assortment of bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues just steps away from campus, students have a hard time getting bored in this town. That being said, sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the dining and nightlife scene and experience something new. If you’re looking to shake things up this year, check out one of the following events near the U-District.
Seattle Boat Show
With its many marinas, ferries, and water taxis, Seattle is a city that’s made for boaters. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that the city is home to the largest boat show on the west coast. Each year in late January and early February, The Seattle Boat Show puts more than 1,000 watercraft on display for a weeklong celebration of all things nautical. Boats are displayed indoors at Century Link Field, as well as dockside at South Lake Union. Although as a college student you may not be in a financial situation that allows you to afford a beautiful catamaran at the moment, the boat show is still a great place to meet people and daydream about adventures on the high seas. Tickets for adults cost $12 per day, though you can buy a five day pass for just $24.
The Northwest Flower and Garden Show
Seattle is notorious for its gray skies and rain, so it’s good to know that there’s an event in town that can brighten the scene and lighten the mood. The Northwest Flower and Garden Show is one such event. Heralding the start of spring since 1989, the garden show beckons flower and gardening enthusiasts from all over the west coast to come and enjoy a five day celebration of horticulture at the Washington State Convention Center each year. In addition to having aisle after aisle of gardening products, the show also has design exhibits to serve as inspiration for your next project. The showcase covers more than an acre of space and includes works from some of the region’s most talented and respected designers and landscapers. Ticket prices vary depending on when you buy, but 2-Day passes are available for $31 at the door.
U-District Street Fair
Nearly five decades in the making, the U-District Street Fair is a time honored tradition for University of Washington students. Celebrating arts, culture, and peace since 1970, the street fair is a weekend festival that happens every May. During the fair, students can support the works of local artisans and satisfy their appetites with food vendors while listening to live performances from homegrown bands. The festival is entirely free of charge.
